Netbook ARM-WM8505 Information

Basic Information
Regarding the Smart Book ARM-WM8505.

By Baneste

A friend of mine got a little
machine at the end of 2011. There was no information about the
manufacturer and almost nothing was found in the Internet that could
tell you where it came from or what could be done to update the
system. It was frustrating to turn that little thing on and discover
that you could do nothing with it, except play Free Cell or
Solitaire.

If you succeeded connecting
to the the Internet, it would be and endless effort trying to load
something that you could read and enjoy. That’s why I decided to
write this post, because I know there are merchants still selling
this machine online, just for the pleasure of making money, without
any concern about the people who invest their savings with the
expectation of getting something usable, at least in proportion to
the value they paid. It took me many hours-days to find out how to
make this thing usable, but I succeeded, and I want to share the
knowledge I got with anybody who is in need of it.

Actually, I didn’t find
anything wrong with the Operative System itself, other than you
cannot access the famous (infamous?) BIOS SETUP UTILITY that is
available in the regular laptops and desktop PCs. That means: you
can’t change system behavior, like booting from a flash drive or SD
card.

How
to Install Opera Mini on Windows CE 6.0 (Netbook ARM-WM8505)

You
will need to download the file
OperaMini.zip
to a different computer. Then yo have to unzip it and copy the
extracted Opera Mini folder to a USB Flash Drive. Next, you need to
transfer that folder to your netbook. Once it’s been installed in
your Smartbook, search for the file
OperaMini5-WM-arm4
and run it.
Due
to the fact that this version of Opera Mini is a mobile application,
there are some issues yo have to be aware of:

1.
You have to set the Windows CE task bar to
auto
hide.
This has to be done because otherwise
you won’t be able to see the whole Opera Mini screen. Doing this
allows you to see a
menu
bar at the bottom of your netbook screen with the
Menu
option. If you click on that be prepare to see not a
Text
menu
, but a Button
menu
, which includes an arrow symbol to go
back, another to go forward, and the exit or turn off symbol that you
have to recognize. Clicking on the exit button will bring up a pop up
message asking you to confirm your decision to exit the application.
And at the bottom menu bar you will see on the left
YES
and on the right
NO.
This is my own method, but I could not do it without the valuable
information I found on http://www.sbonkov.blogspot.com,
which you would like
check to find additional information that may not be included in this
post.

2.
There is an issue when accessing wireless Internet connection with
this little machine. There is an icon on the desktop that allows you
to turn on or off the wireless device. You want to make sure that is
on by double-clicking on it. If is on, you will see two Network
Connections icons on the right side of the taskbar crossed by a red
“x”. Double click at the one on the left. A menu will pop up with
three tabs; the last one to the left will show you all the available
wireless connections. You have to know the name of the connection you
need to use and the key (if required) to access the service. Next
time you come close to this signal, it will connect
automatically.

ARM Netbook Desktop (Taskbar auto hide option).

When I said at the beginning of this post that you could do
nothing with this little netbook, except playing Free Cell or
Solitaire, I was wrong, because is actually very productive: You can
write documents using WordPad, which is not the normal WorPad you find
in all other versions of Windows. This is a unique version because it
has extended functionalities. It has also a basic version o f Power
Point and Exel, and one of the best Calculators in the world.

Pop up Network Connections Menu
screen.

TIPS
FOR GETTING THE MOST OUT OF THE ARM-WM8505

1.
When using any of the programs that do not depend on internet
connection to function, it is important to turn off the wireless
signal, because having it on slows down the applications. Remember
that this netbook only has 128 MB of memory.

2.
If you find any difficulty using Opera Mini, since you have to
combine mouse and keys to browse through pages, you can still use
Internet Explorer, but you have to modify the advanced internet
options found on the control panel. Let me tell you the ones that
have to be uncheck:

Accessibility

Both
boxes have to be uncheck.

Browsing

Always
send URLs as UTF-8.
Display
a notification for every script error.
Disable
automatic SIP
.

Multimedia

Show
video on web pages.
Show
animations on web pages
.

Security

Warn
if changing
between secure and not secure mode
.

3.
Finally, I have to say that it is possible to upgrade the system.
Service Packs are available at the Microsoft site. But upgrading
could be a challenging task for some people, because requires certain
technical level. Anyway, the instructions to install the updates come
with the download.
